Away Review: Is Away Luggage Good for Business Travel?

Away is the suitcase brand you see in every airport lounge: clean polycarbonate shells, bright colors and a lot of Instagram. That reputation says little about how the bag holds up on a Monday 6:00 flight, a Wednesday client visit and a Friday red-eye home. This Away luggage review looks at the brand strictly through a business traveler’s lens: what you get, how it fits overhead bins, what the new LifetimeCare coverage really includes, and what a bag like this costs you per trip.

Away used to sell only through its own website. Since May 2025, a large part of the range is also on Amazon, including The Carry-On and The Bigger Carry-On (NBC News Select). Those two models are the focus here, with a look at the brand new Series 3 and the Front Pocket Carry-On for laptop users.

Quick verdict

  • Best for most business trips: Away The Carry-On. 41 L, 7.5 lb, sized for 3 to 5 days.
  • Best for a full work week: Away The Bigger Carry-On. 49 L for 4 to 7 days, but over the common 22 x 14 x 9 in limit on paper.
  • Best for laptop users: the Front Pocket Carry-On, with a padded front pocket for a 14 in laptop (on awaytravel.com).
  • Skip Away if: you often fly airlines with strict 55 x 40 x 20 cm limits or you want a bag that compresses into tight sizers.

Away luggage review: The Carry-On (22 x 14.4 x 9.1 in, 41 L, 7.5 lb) vs The Bigger Carry-On (23 x 15.4 x 9.4 in, 49 L, 7.9 lb)

One note on the numbers: Away’s own Carry-On page lists two sets of figures (22 x 14.4 x 9.1 in and 41 L in the spec section, 21.7 x 14.4 x 9 in in the FAQ). We use the spec section values, which are the larger ones, so you plan for the worst case at the gate.

CHAMPS Luggage: shop luggage and travel essentials

Design and Build Quality

Both bags use a 100% polycarbonate hard shell. Polycarbonate flexes on impact instead of cracking, which is why most premium hardside carry-ons use it. The trade-off is cosmetic: glossy shells show scuffs quickly, and Away’s coverage does not include scratches, dents or stains (Away LifetimeCare).

The trolley is a quick-release handle with two height settings on the classic models, plus a grab handle on the underside. The four 360 degree spinner wheels roll smoothly on terminal floors. On cobblestones and broken sidewalks, small hardside spinner wheels are always the weak point, so tilt the bag and pull it on two wheels when the surface gets rough.

Interior organization

Away uses a clamshell layout with a compression pad on one side and a zippered mesh panel on the other. The compression pad has a double-buckle strap that pushes clothes flat, so a suit jacket and shirts stay in place. A water-repellent laundry bag is included. There is no built-in suiter, and there are no shoe bags, so business travelers who carry dress shoes should add a shoe bag or a set of packing cubes.

Older Away suitcases came with an ejectable battery. That is gone: Away states that the current design does not accommodate a battery and that only suitcases sold before July 2023 included one (Away). Carry a separate airline-approved power bank instead, which is more practical anyway because you can take it to your seat.

Will Away Luggage Fit in the Overhead Bin?

This is where hardside bags need more attention than softside ones. A softside bag can squeeze into a sizer. A polycarbonate shell cannot.

  • The Carry-On: 22 x 14.4 x 9.1 in. That is 0.4 in wider and 0.1 in deeper than the common 22 x 14 x 9 in limit used by American, Delta, United, Alaska and JetBlue (Monos, August 2026). In practice it is accepted on most flights, and Away says it fits overhead on most major airlines.
  • The Bigger Carry-On: 23 x 15.4 x 9.4 in. That is 1 in taller, 1.4 in wider and 0.4 in deeper than 22 x 14 x 9 in. Away still states that it fits overhead on most major US airlines, but you are relying on gate agents not measuring.
  • European and Asian airlines: limits around 55 x 40 x 20 cm or 55 x 40 x 23 cm are common, often with a weight limit as well. The Carry-On measures about 55.9 x 36.6 x 23.1 cm, so on paper it is slightly over on height, and over on depth for a 20 cm limit.

Our advice: if your company books basic economy or you fly a lot in Europe, choose The Carry-On, not the Bigger. If you fly mostly on full-service US fares and stay away five nights, the Bigger Carry-On is the more comfortable bag, as long as you accept the occasional gate check.

The expandable Flex versions add 2.25 in of depth. Away itself notes that you may need to check the Bigger Carry-On Flex when it is fully expanded (Away). Keep the expansion closed on the outbound flight.

LifetimeCare: Away’s New Coverage Explained

Away replaced its old limited lifetime warranty with a program called LifetimeCare. For suitcases bought from April 14, 2026, it works like this (Away LifetimeCare):

  • Years 1 to 5: free repairs for functional damage, including damage from travel mishaps such as rough airline handling, with free round-trip shipping. If a covered suitcase cannot be repaired, you get one replacement.
  • Year 6 and later: repairs continue for the life of the suitcase. Shipping stays free, but Away notes that a reasonable service fee may apply.
  • LifetimeCare Pro: an optional add-on, available within 100 days of purchase, that extends free repairs to 10 years with up to two replacements.
  • Not covered: cosmetic wear such as scuffs, scratches, dents and stains, and lost or stolen luggage.
  • Airline damage: file a claim with the airline first. If that does not resolve it, Away’s specialists step in.

Suitcases bought before April 14, 2026 remain under the previous limited lifetime warranty. Away also offers free returns and exchanges on unused items within 100 days.

How does that compare? Travelpro and Briggs and Riley still advertise longer-running repair coverage on their business lines. Our Briggs and Riley vs Tumi warranty comparison explains why repair terms matter more than the purchase price when you fly every month.

What Does Away Luggage Cost per Trip?

A premium carry-on only makes sense if it lasts. The calculator below divides the price you see today by the number of trips you will take with the bag, and compares it with a cheaper bag that you may have to replace more often. Fill in your own numbers: the default values are examples, not current prices.

Enter the price you see today, how often you fly and how long you expect each bag to last at your travel rhythm. The calculator shows what each bag really costs you per trip and per night away.

The values in the fields are examples, not current prices. Use the price you see today and your own estimate of how long a bag lasts at your travel rhythm.

A simple rule of thumb from the calculator: if you fly once a month and a cheap spinner breaks after two years, a premium bag that lasts five years is usually the cheaper choice per trip, even when it costs twice as much up front. If you travel a few times a year, the math rarely favors premium luggage.

Series 3 and the Front Pocket Carry-On

Away Series 3

In the fall of 2026 Away launched Series 3, a redesign of its core hardside line (Away Series 3). The Carry-On 3 keeps the 22.1 x 14.4 x 9.1 in footprint and 41 L capacity but adds features that business travelers will notice (Away Carry-On 3):

  • StopLock rear-wheel brakes, so the bag does not roll away on a train or a sloped jet bridge
  • An infinite height trolley and two hideaway hooks rated for up to 22 lb, handy for a laptop bag or coat
  • Quieter WhisperGlide triple-bearing wheels
  • A hidden pocket for a Bluetooth tracker and a CompressMore compression pad
  • Top, side and underside grab handles

The catch is weight. The Carry-On 3 weighs 8.6 lb against 7.5 lb for the classic Carry-On, and the Bigger Carry-On 3 weighs 9 lb. At the time of writing Series 3 is sold through Away directly, while Amazon carries the classic models.

Front Pocket Carry-On

The Front Pocket Carry-On (also listed as the Executive Carry-On) is the most business-focused Away bag. It adds a water-repellent nylon front pocket with sleeves for a 14 in laptop, a phone pocket and a hidden pocket for keys (Away). You pay for that convenience in space and weight: 33 L and 9 lb, measured at 21.7 x 14.4 x 9 in. If you work on the plane, the front pocket saves you from opening the case in the aisle. If you already carry a laptop backpack, the classic Carry-On gives you more packing space.

Pros and Cons

Pros

  • Light for a hardside bag: 7.5 lb for The Carry-On
  • Effective compression pad that keeps suits and shirts flat
  • LifetimeCare covers functional damage, including airline mishaps, with free repairs for five years
  • Now available on Amazon with Prime shipping
  • Series 3 adds wheel brakes and hooks that make airports easier

Cons

  • Hard shell does not compress, and both sizes are slightly over 22 x 14 x 9 in on paper
  • The Bigger Carry-On is well over common limits on paper
  • No built-in suiter or shoe bags
  • Glossy shells scuff, and cosmetic damage is not covered
  • No front laptop pocket on the classic models

How to Choose the Right Away Bag for Work Trips

  • Count your nights. Up to four nights with one suit: The Carry-On. Five nights or a mix of business and gym clothes: The Bigger Carry-On.
  • Check your fares. If your travel policy books basic economy, check which fares include a full-size carry-on before you buy any bag.
  • Think about your laptop. If you want one bag on the plane, consider the Front Pocket Carry-On. If you carry a backpack, the classic shell gives you more room.
  • Weigh the new features. Brakes and hooks are useful on trains and in long security lines. If weight matters more, the classic models are about 1 lb lighter.
  • Do the cost-per-trip math. Use the calculator above with your own trips per year.

Tips for Traveling with Away Luggage

  • Register your suitcase after purchase. It is not required for LifetimeCare, but it makes claims faster.
  • Photograph your bag at check-in or at the gate. If it is damaged, the airline claim is the first step.
  • Pack heavy items near the wheels so the bag stays stable on its spinners.
  • Use the compression pad for jackets and shirts, and put shoes in a separate bag along the trolley side.
  • Slip an AirTag or another tracker into the bag. Series 3 has a dedicated pocket for it.

Final Verdict

Is Away luggage good for business travel? Yes, with conditions. The Carry-On is a light, well-organized hardside bag that suits short work trips on full-service airlines, and LifetimeCare now covers functional damage with free repairs for five years. The Bigger Carry-On packs a full week but asks for some luck at the gate.

If you need a bag that squeezes into strict sizers, wants built-in shoe and suit organization, or flies budget carriers in Europe, a softside business carry-on is the safer pick. If you value a clean, light hardside case and fly mostly US majors, Away earns its place.

Frequently Asked Questions

Question: Is Away luggage good for business travel?
Answer: Yes, for most short work trips. The Carry-On weighs 7.5 lb, holds 41 L and has a compression pad that keeps clothes flat. It lacks shoe bags and a laptop pocket, and its hard shell does not compress into tight sizers.

Question: Does the Away Carry-On fit in overhead bins?
Answer: Away says it fits overhead on most major airlines. Its spec section lists 22 x 14.4 x 9.1 in, slightly over the common 22 x 14 x 9 in limit on paper, so a strict gate agent could ask you to check it.

Question: Is the Away Bigger Carry-On allowed as a carry-on?
Answer: Away states it fits overhead on most major US airlines, but at 23 x 15.4 x 9.4 in it is larger than the 22 x 14 x 9 in limit used by many US airlines. Expect a gate check now and then, especially on full flights.

Question: Can you buy Away luggage on Amazon?
Answer: Yes. Since May 2025 Away sells a large part of its range on Amazon, including The Carry-On and The Bigger Carry-On. The new Series 3 models are sold through Away directly at the time of writing.

Question: What does Away LifetimeCare cover?
Answer: For suitcases bought from April 14, 2026, it covers functional damage, including travel mishaps, with free repairs and free shipping for five years and one replacement if a repair is not possible. Repairs continue after that, possibly with a service fee. Cosmetic damage and lost or stolen bags are not covered.

Question: Does Away luggage still have a battery?
Answer: No. Away says its current suitcases do not accommodate a battery. Only suitcases sold before July 2023 included one.
